iPad 2 vs. Playbook

Many people are highly anticipating the announcement and subsequent release of the Apple iPad 2 and the Blackberry Playbook. Personally, I've been looking at the specs of both and have been deliberating over which one I will buy when they come out.

The Playbook

On September 27, 2010, Research in Motion announced their upcoming tablet: the Playbook. The Playbook specs are detailed on the Blackberry website. Here are a few of the most appealing aspects of the tablet:
          -Adobe Flash Web Support
          -Dual HD Video Cameras
          -Business Appeal

While it is nice that the Playbook will support Adobe Flash websites, there has been a recent shift to HTML-5 over the years, which will eliminate the need for the "crash-happy" Flash. The Playbook will have a 1 Ghz Dual-Core processor and 1 GB of RAM.

While Blackberry advertises a "Rich application ecosystem," recent rumours have stated that Research in Motion is desperate for developers, looking for new apps to be supported on the tablet. In regards to the cameras, the iPhone 4 currently holds the same resolutions: 3 megapixels in the front and 5 megapixels in the back. However, according to recent Apple rumours, the iPad 2 will have only a 1 megapixel rear-facing camera.

While some claim that Blackberry is the "phone for businesses," it seems that many company CEOs have made the switch to the iPhone for its reliability and service.

Though all of these features sound great, consumers are beginning to wonder if the device even exists, deeming it "vaporware." On September 27, 2010, Research in Motion introduced the Blackberry Playbook in a keynote. Since that time, they have announced two more tablets, the Playbook 4G and the Playbook 4G LTE, without ever producing the original. The media are eating up these new innovations, but none of them seem to have asked the most obvious question: "Where are they?!" I, as well as tons of others, agree with the popular tech website The Loop when I say, "RIM Shut Up and Ship!"

iPad 2

Though many expected the iPad 2 to be announced on February 9th, after a set of highly escalated rumours, the announcement date still remains unclear. It seems that Blackberry, with their "vaporware" has not even phased Apple in their creation of the iPad 2. To me, the extremely premature announcement of the Playbook was just a ploy to make Apple ship their new product much earlier than planned, which would take away from their Verizon iPhone hype as well as current iPad sales. That desperate attempt to get into the tablet market has failed so far.

The iPad 2 is rumoured to have front– and rear-facing cameras as well as FaceTime and NFC technology. It is also thought to be gaining a USB-port, but according to reports that the new iPad will be thinner than its predecessor, it seems unlikely that the USB will become a reality (the current iPad can barely fit one). We can also expect expanded battery life as well as an upgraded display – but not the much expected Retina display that is currently on the iPhone 4. Remember, though, all of the iPad 2 specs are merely rumours at this stage.

The new iPad will also come, as with all iDevices, with Apple's impeccable customer service and support.

After a long and drawn-out thinking process (and Blackberry's inability to return any of my tweets), I have decided to stick with Apple in the fight for the tablet market. It's pro's outweigh the pro's of the Blackberry Playbook – especially in the sense that the iPad 2 will actually be coming out eventually!

  1. After reading this post I couldn't help but make a response. Firstly it seems to be a review based on products not yet available to the market? The iPad 2 which is absolutely just that a rumour surely cannot be evaluated against the Blackberry Playbook at this stage?

The Blackberry Playbook will be one of the most anticipated tablets of the year as well as one of the most refined due to the time and development that has gone into the product. Thirdly it is clear here that the author hasn't been paying attention to Mobile World Congress or CES, the two major technology events of the year! Therefore is unaware of the dominance of the Android brand! According to Gartners statistics Android has slayed iOS, RIM and symbian in the smartphone OS wars and thats only about to get larger this year. The Motorola Atrix 4G, Samsung Galaxy S 2, Xperia Play, LG Optimus 2 all currently outspec all Apple products and this will only continue! Since this post is based upon tablets it's only fair to mention the Android Tablets as well as the new WebOS tablets coming from HP. Motorola Xoom, Samsung Galaxy Tab 2, HTC Flyer,LG G-Slate just to name a few all feature the Android 3.0 Honeycomb software, custom made for tablets all with dual core, intense packets of RAM and a lot more features for a lot less!

The key thing is here, the playbook, WebOS, and Android Honeycomb have all been custom made for the tablet experience. The iPad's OS is still a phones OS if they want to succeed they need to change that style! No flash as well Apple? Yes HTML 5 is coming except the code isn't to be finalised for another 11 years but for the time being we want flash, so stop throwing your toys out your cradle and give us flash!

The Technology world is advancing, due to the larger coverage of Android etc the technology available for these other devices is as well and Apple won't be able to keep up! NFC has been in phones since November, its time ti pick up the game! Apple now wants 30% of all takings from in App purchases, Google wants 10% how will developers find this? Android Market will house more apps by the end of this year than the App store and that Google technology will be all around us!

The only reason you would buy an Apple product over any other is because "it looks nice". If you have an appreciation for the technology inside then the Apple mobile range isn't for you.

Finally if you're doing a review wait till the products are available, get hold of them and then review them! Until then read a real Technology Blogging site such as Engadget and get the real beans!

Look out Apple, theres a storm coming!

  2. I completely disagree with your claim that the Playbook will be the most highly anticipated tablet this year because I have failed to see anything for five months except three tablet announcements and no product.

Android has slain iOS? Ha! In case you haven't been keeping up with Mobile World Congress, the iPhone 4 just won the Best Mobile Device Award – and they didn't even show up to the event!

In regards to your thoughts on Apple's new subscription policy, I think you should read Cult of Mac's great article on it:
    http://www.cultofmac.com/why-apple-wont-kill-print-and-google-wont-kill-apple/82534

I don't buy products because they look nice; I buy products because of their efficiency and the support they contribute to my everyday life. Apple's products have a proven track record of being efficient, and the calendar, notes, etc. are great because they not only sync to my MacBook, but also to my email. Apple's customer service is also incredible! I've never had better customer service experience on any product in my life. I love the simplicity.

Oh, and by the way, I've had an Android, and I frequently use Blackberrys. They both freeze and crash when you try to do anything other than simple, typical user commands on them. My iPhone has never frozen or crashed.

Your last paragraph makes me think you work for Blackberry, who never return my tweet. So, why would they bother to read my dislike of their products and, especially, their customer service.

Finally, we come to your last sentence. I think the contraction you were looking for was "there's."
